Moncayo said the two gangs were trying to gain criminal leadership inside the detention centers. The police came to know about it and the authorities started searching for weapons on Monday. Meanwhile, violence erupted in the jail. Gangs of prisoners broke into each other with knives and iron rods. He said that 33 people died in Cuenca, southern Ecuador. At the same time, 21 people were killed in the city of Guayaquil on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and eight people in the country’s central city of Latacunga (Latacunga).

Prison director Moncaio said that 70 percent of the country’s prison population lives in detention centers. Due to this, there is violence between rival gangs regarding its leadership. In a tweet, Patricio Pazmino, the minister of the government, alleged that criminal organizations want to gain their leadership by creating violence in the country’s jails.
