“Whoever you trust, make him the chief minister”, the captain furious at the Congress high command after resigning

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh resigned from his post ahead of the crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party. A few months before the assembly elections, this demand for change in the leadership of the government was being raised by the party’s legislators. The decision came after a meeting of MLAs close to the Chief Minister at his official residence in Chandigarh. Earlier in the day, Amarinder Singh called up Congress President Sonia Gandhi and expressed her “sadness for being humiliated”.

On Saturday evening, Captain Amarinder Singh submitted his resignation along with his Council of Ministers to the Governor. “I feel humiliated…” Amarinder Singh told the media after meeting the Punjab governor at around 4.30 pm

An angry Amarinder Singh stood outside the Governor’s House and explained the reason behind his decision. “I was humiliated thrice by the Congress leadership in the last two months… They called MLAs to Delhi twice and now today called CLP here in Chandigarh,” he said.

Punjab Congress Crisis: Captain Amarinder Singh resigns as Chief Minister, says- I felt humiliated

Singh said he had taken the decision and informed Congress President Sonia Gandhi in the morning that he would resign. Then, he angrily said that he would not accept the next chief minister without talking to ministers and MLAs close to him.

After submitting his resignation letter to the governor, he told reporters at the Raj Bhavan gate, “Obviously they (Congress high command) don’t have faith in me and I didn’t think I could handle my job, but the way they completed I was feeling humiliated by the handling of the matter.”

Taking a jibe at the party leadership, the Captain said, “Make him the chief minister whom he trusts.” He further said, “I am in the Congress party and will talk to my colleagues. After that we will take a decision about the politics ahead. It is their wish, make whomever they want as the chief minister.”
