Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reviewed the current situation of oxygen supply in the country, as well as the situation arising in view of its anticipated use in the next 15 days in the 12 states most affected by the corona virus. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi also reviewed in detail to ensure adequate supply of medical grade oxygen in the country.
The PM stressed that it is important to ensure coordination between ministries and state governments. According to the PMO, the Prime Minister asked for mutual coordination between all the ministries and ensuring cooperation with the state governments. Inputs from ministries like Health, DPIIT, Steel, Road Transport were also shared with the PM.
The statement said that PM Modi reviewed the current state of oxygen supply in the country and its estimated use in the next 15 days in the 12 states most affected by the Corona epidemic. These 12 states include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The complete details of the district-wise status of oxygen supply in these states were presented to the Prime Minister.
Officials also apprised the Prime Minister about the efforts being made to import medical grade oxygen into the country. PM Modi was told that the Center and the states are in regular contact and estimates of projected demand have been shared with the states on April 20, April 25 and April 30. Accordingly, these 12 states have been allocated 4,880 MT, 5,619 MT and 6,593 MT to meet their projected demand on 20 April, 25 April and 30 April.
To meet the growing demand, the Prime Minister was informed about the production capacity in the country. PM Modi suggested to increase oxygen production according to the capacity of each plant. It was also said to ensure that stocks of oxygen supply in steel plants are being made available for medical use. PM Modi directed the officials to ensure the uninterrupted movement of oxygen carrying tankers across the country.
