The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Wednesday that the Australian city of Brisbane has been selected to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. IOC President Thomas Bach said: “The International Olympic Committee has the honor to announce that the Games of the 35th Olympiad are held in Brisbane, Australia.” The decision was welcomed by representatives of Brisbane at the IOC session, AFP reported.
On the other hand in Brisbane, where the crowd had gathered, the announcement was followed by fireworks on the big screen. With this, Australia has become the second country after the US to host the Olympic Games in three different cities. Earlier, the Olympics were organized in Melbourne in 1956 and in Sydney in 2000.
Several cities and countries had expressed interest in hosting the 2032 Games, including Indonesia, Hungary’s capital Budapest, China, Qatar’s Doha and Germany’s Ruhr Valley region.
Brisbane, however, was the preferred host, chosen in February, and received the approval of the IOC’s 15-strong executive board in June.
During the bidding, Brisbane has repeatedly drawn praise from the IOC for its current venue, support from all levels of the public and private sector, experience in organizing major events, favorable weather and more.
The IOC changed its bidding rules in 2019 to reduce costs and make the process easier for cities. No official candidate will campaign for the city before the vote, as it used to be. Instead, the IOC now chooses a preferred host after negotiations with all interested cities and then votes on that city in its session.
Tokyo is hosting the postponed 2020 Olympic Games this week and Paris will stage the 2024 Games. After this, Los Angeles will be given a chance to host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
