Lewis was the director of the respective project. The charge sheet was filed in this case on 30 December 2019. In March 2010, Dr. Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust received a grant of Rs.71 lakh 50 thousand from the then central government for distributing wheelchairs, tricycles and hearing aids to differently-abled people in 17 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
The allegation of embezzlement in this amount was leveled against the officials of the trust. It was alleged that the grant was obtained from the central government by forging signatures and stamps of senior UP officials.
The trust had claimed that it had distributed those equipment to differently-abled children by organizing camps in more than a dozen districts of the state including Etah, Etawah, Farrukhabad, Kasganj, Mainpuri, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur, Meerut and Bareilly. Later investigation revealed that those camps were never set up.
