Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde has suggested the name of Justice NV Ramana to the Center as the 48th Chief Justice of the country. CJI Bobde is scheduled to retire on 23 April. Keeping in mind the rules and norms of seniority, the CJI has suggested his name for the 48th Chief Justice of India. If the recommendation is approved by the government, Justice Ramana will take over as the next Chief Justice of India on 24 April.
Justice Nathalapathy Venkata Ramana was born on 27 August 1957 in an agricultural family in Ponnavaram village in the state of Andhra Pradesh. He was nominated as a lawyer to the bar on 10 February 1983, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 27 January 2000. He also served as Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from 10 March 2013 to 20 May 2013.
These historical decisions were given by the bench of Justice Ramna:
– Justice Ramanna was one of the bench of the Supreme Court which ruled in Jammu and Kashmir to immediately review the suspension of internet.
– In January this year, a Supreme Court bench of Justices NV Ramana and Suryakant said that the value of a woman’s work in the house will not be less than that of her office going husband. In 1993, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Lata Wadhwa vs. State of Bihar, saying that there is no single aspect of service of a housewife. She looks after the entire family.
In the year 2019, the Constitution Bench of Supreme Court Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice NV Ramanna, Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjeev Khanna gave an important judgment saying that the office of Chief Justice of India also comes under the purview of Right to Information is.
– The 5-judge constitution bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice NV Ramanna, Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjeev Khanna upheld the validity of Section 184 of the Finance Act, 2017. The Bench held that the said section does not suffer from excessive delegation of legislative functions.
