The next Chief Justice of the country will be Justice Nathalapathy Venkata Ramana. President Ram Nath Kovind has approved his appointment. After receiving approval from the President, now on April 24, Justice Ramna will be sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of the country. Justice Ramana is the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after the present Chief Justice SA Bobde. Let the Chief Justice SA Bobde recommend the name of Justice NV Ramana as his successor on 24 March.
Nathalapathy Venkata Raman is the full name of Senior Justice NV Ramana in the Supreme Court. He was born on 27 August 1957 in an agricultural family in Ponnavaram village in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. Previously, he was also the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and the Acting Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He has also served as the President of the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy. He will retire on 26 August 2022.

Current Chief Justice (CJI) SA Bobde is retiring on 23 April and Justice NV Ramanna will be sworn in as the next CJI on 24 April. Justice NV Ramana was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in the year 2014. However, Justice Ramanna is due to retire on August 26, 2022, hence less than two years are left in his tenure as the Chief Justice.
NV Ramana became a lawyer on 10 February 1983. Justice NV Ramana has practiced in the High Court of Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Labor, Service and Election matters in the Andhra Pradesh, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals and the Supreme Court of India. He specializes in constitutional, criminal, service and inter-state river laws.
Justice Ramna’s most popular decision in the last few years has been the restoration of the Internet in Jammu and Kashmir. Justice Ramna has also been a member of the bench which has decided to bring the office of the Chief Justice under the purview of the Right to Information Act (RTI).
Justice NV Ramana served as Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from 10 March 2013 to 20 May 2013. Apart from this, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in the year 2013.
