BJP’s strong leaders in West Bengal had put a lot of effort to defeat the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the assembly elections, but despite this, the magic of Mamata reverberated. TMC is heading towards a historic win in over 200 seats in the state. This victory will also affect the national politics before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
However, it was not easy for TMC to win the election for the third time in the state. People were angry with the party over issues such as corruption and poor law and order situation. Prior to the election, many senior TMC leaders had changed sides and made BJP their new home.
But TMC succeeded in bringing voters’ sympathy back with Mamata by presenting Mamata as the only woman to fight “the big men of BJP from Delhi”. Along with this, TMC also raised the issues of Bengali identity and external leaders with stamina and in favor of women as well as Muslim voters.
The BJP had a huge success in West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But in this year’s assembly elections, she failed to cash in on people’s resentment against Mamata’s government. Along with this, the BJP suffered due to the weak organization of the party in the state.
Two big changes in the election
Mamta suffered a leg injury in Nandigram on March 10 after which she campaigned in a wheelchair and blamed the BJP for her injury. However, the BJP made fun of her injury and termed it as an attempt to garner Mamata’s sympathy. Since Mamata’s injury, her popularity grew, especially among female voters. TMC had presented its leader as a “fighter didi” against whom major attacks are taking place.
After the one day ban was imposed by the Election Commission, Mamata sat on a lonely dharna in Kolkata for several hours and this reinforced the perception that she was under attack from all around and that she had become lonely.
In a recent interview to News18, senior TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay had said that the women were very upset by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s saying “didi-o-didi” and because of this she would give full support to Mamta.
The second major turn was the firing by Central Security Forces in Sitalkuchi in the fourth phase of polling in which four Muslim boys were killed. This incident gave Mamta another chance to fully support the Muslim voters.
News18 has come to know that TMC has also benefitted from the absence of Congress from campaigning in Malda, Murshidabad and Dinajpur and that there could be a back-of-the-scenes agreement between the Congress and TMC.
