Fuel price hike continues in the country. Meanwhile, a fuel station Kudukoli pump at Perla in Enmakaje gram panchayat of Kasaragod district of Kerala is giving three liters of free fuel to all autorickshaw drivers. The pump announced a two-day offer before giving both petrol and diesel free from 6.30 am on Monday. Fuel station manager Siddiq Madumool said 313 autorickshaws were numbered at the pump before it closed at 9.30 pm.
According to the New Indian Express, the pump is owned by Siddiq’s elder brother Abdullah Madumool, a chartered accountant in Abu Dhabi. Abdullah said the decision to make fuel free was taken to help the autorickshaw drivers amidst the lockdown and the daily hike in fuel prices.
Siddique said “this was done as a charity and not to promote the business.” He informed that the autorickshaws had come from Shardaka, Perla, Badiyadka in Karnataka, as well as from Neerchal, 15 km away, to avail the offer.
Sanjeev Maipadi, who reached here after covering a distance of 15 km from Neerchal, told the newspaper, “I have been driving auto for 37 years, but no pump has ever given free petrol and diesel, but I still get 2 liters free. I have found.”
Sanjeev says that apart from the hike in fuel prices, the insurance premium for a new autorickshaw has gone up from Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000 now.
Udayakumar S, an autorickshaw driver from Perla, praised Abdullah and said, “I know him personally. He does many charities like distributing food kits to the poor, but this is the first time I have heard of someone giving free petrol. Had he been in Perla today, we auto drivers would garland him and give the hero’s reception.”
Petrol and diesel prices were again hiked on Wednesday, June 16, after a day-long pause, taking auto fuel prices across the country to historic highs.
Prices also hit new highs in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Petrol became costlier by 22 to 25 paise, while diesel rose by 12 to 14 paise per liter, according to the new prices, according to rate notifications from state-owned fuel retailers.
