The term of Chief Justice of India Justice SA Bobde is nearing completion. There is only about a month left for his retirement, but the collegium headed by him has not even made the first recommendation for the judge. Bobde took over as Chief Justice of India in November 2019. However, during this time, the name of Chief Justice Akil Kureshi of Tripura High Court is coming out.
According to a report by The Indian Express, this will be the first time since 2015 when CJI will have no successor at the time of his retirement. Earlier this happened in the year 2015 during the tenure of CJI HL Dattu. At that time there was an argument between the judiciary and the government over the National Judicial Appointments Commission, NJAC. However, this deadlock is internal this time. It is believed that this will be the first time in 5 years in the case of Justice Bobde that the current CJI will retire without any appointment.
Sources have told the newspaper that there is no consensus on the appointment of Justice Akil Qureshi in the collegium. However, this is not the first time that there are difficulties in deciding the name of Qureshi. Even during the appointment of Justice Qureshi as Tripura Chief Justice, there was a dispute for the Supreme Court Collegium. The collegium was then headed by former CJI Ranjan Gogoi. The collegium comprises CJI Bobde, NV Ramanna, Rohinton Nariman, UU Lalit, AM Khanvilkar.
