Afghanistan’s first Vice President Amrullah Saleh has claimed that he is now the legitimate caretaker president of the country after President Ashraf Ghani left the country with the Taliban entering Kabul on Sunday and his whereabouts were not known. Huh. He said that he is in Kabul. Let us tell you that shortly before the capture of the capital Kabul by the Taliban, President Ashraf Ghani left the country.
Saleh said Afghanistan’s constitution gives him the power to declare it. He has written that he is reaching out to all the leaders so that their support can be obtained and consensus can be reached. At present, several Afghan leaders, including former President Hamid Karzai and peace council chief Abdullah Abdullah, are holding talks since the Taliban took over Kabul.
In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Saleh said it was useless to argue with US President Joe Biden, who made the decision to withdraw US troops. He called on Afghan citizens to show that Afghanistan is not Vietnam. He insisted that he would never bow down to the Taliban under any circumstances.
Who is Amrulla Saleh?
48-year-old former spy Saleh still hasn’t left the country. According to the report, he is currently in the Panjshir Valley, northeast of Kabul, which is still free from Taliban control. Saleh has been organizing frequent protests against the Taliban. Ahmed Masood and Defense Minister Bismillah Mohammadi have also pledged their support. Ahmed is the son of slain commander Ahmed Shah Masood, during whose lifetime the Taliban could not conquer the Panjshir Valley in its last regime between 1996 and 2001.
Born in Panjshir in October 1972, Saleh became an orphan at a very young age. He was the chief of the country’s intelligence agency NDS before taking over as the Vice President of Afghanistan. An AFP report said Amarullah, who hails from the Tajik ethnic group, was Afghanistan’s internal affairs minister in 2018 and 2019.
When Soviet forces entered Afghanistan in the 90s, Saleh received arms training in Pakistan and fought under the leadership of Ahmed Shah Masood, a commander known as the Sher of Panjshir. After this, when the Taliban started spreading in Afghanistan, then under the leadership of Saleh Masood, he jumped into the war against the Taliban. After this, Saleh developed friendship with India. He got Ahmed Shah Masood to meet Indian officials and got help.
Afghanistan intelligence agency led
He then headed the National Directorate of Security (NDS), the newly formed Afghanistan intelligence agency, in 2004. The intelligence gathered Saleh as the NDS chief, provided what he alleged was evidence that the Pakistani military continued to support the Taliban. In 2010, however, Saleh was sacked as Afghanistan’s spy chief following a humiliating attack on the Kabul peace conference.
In 2018 he returned as in charge of the Interior Ministry under President Ashraf Ghani’s regime. On 19 January, Saleh resigned as interior minister to join Ashraf Ghani’s election team. Saleh was appointed as the first Vice President of Afghanistan in January 2019 after Ghani’s re-election. Saleh has created such a network of his spies that helps him to monitor the activities of Taliban and ISI from Afghanistan to Pakistan.
It is said that Saleh has good relations with the Indian intelligence agency RAW. Pakistanis hate them because of their friendship. He is the biggest enemy of the Taliban because of his tough action against the jihadists. The Taliban leaders wanted to capture Saleh, but he secretly went to the Panjshir Valley, an impregnable fortress of the rebels.
There have been many attacks
So far, there have been horrific deadly attacks on Saleh. Saleh was injured in a bomb attack in Kabul on September 9, 2020, in which 10 people were killed. Then on July 28, 2019, three terrorists broke into Saleh’s office in Kabul and a suicide bomber blew himself up killing 20 people. While Saleh survived. In this attack he lost several associates and two nephews.
sister killed by Taliban
Before heading Afghan intelligence, Saleh was a member of the late guerrilla fighter Ahmed Shah Massoud’s Northern Coalition, which fought the Taliban when it came to power in 1996. According to an AFP report, Saleh’s sister was killed by Taliban fighters in 1996. Saleh wrote in a Time magazine editorial last year that what happened in 1996 changed my view of the Taliban forever.
Ahmad Shah Masood was a powerful guerrilla commander during the resistance against the Soviet occupation between 1979 and 1989. In the 1990s he led the government’s forces after the takeover of the Taliban. Masood was the leading opposition commander against his regime until his assassination in 2001. Along with armed fighters, Vice President Amrullah Saleh is busy preparing Panjshir in the fight against the Taliban.
