Initially it will be implemented in 256 districts of the country. Giving information about this, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that no penalty will be taken till August 2021. Also, jewelers with annual turnover up to Rs 40 lakh will be exempted from mandatory hallmarking.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Leena Nandan told the news agency that the mandatory hallmarking system on gold is going to be implemented from Wednesday, June 16, 2021. He said that it would be implemented in a phased manner and initially it would be implemented in 256 districts. Where there are lab centers to check the purity of the precious metal.

Customers benefit the most from hallmarking. With this, customers are saved from frauds that happen while buying gold. The central government has also formed a committee to implement the new system for selling jewellery. This committee will also work to solve the problems faced in implementing this system.
Once hallmarking becomes mandatory, only 22 carat, 18 carat and 14 carat jewelery will be sold. Strict action will be taken against any jeweler found selling gold jewelery without hallmarking. If found guilty, there is also a provision of imposing a penalty of up to five times the value of gold jewellery, in addition to one year in jail.
Every carat of gold has a hallmark number. Jewelers use the number 916 for 22 carats. The number 750 is used for 18 carat and 585 number is used for 14 carat. Through these numbers you will know how many carats the gold is.
The central government had announced gold hallmarking rules for gold jewelery in November 2019, these rules were to be implemented across the country from January 2021 but due to Corona, jewelers were asking for more time.
