MGNREGS: Gap between work demanded and given at an all-time high

MGNREGS: The gap between the work demanded and the work provided under the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme reached an all-time high in November. In November, work of only 11.66 crore persons was generated. There were 22.23 crore persons in October, while in November, 2.62 crore people sought work under MGNREGA as against 2.60 crore in October.

50.5% less than Persondays November 2020

Year-on-year, the persons generated under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme decreased by 50.5% as against 23.58 crore in November 2020. Even in the pre-Covid period, more than 16.92 crore work was generated in November 2019, when the number of persons seeking work under the scheme was 1.92 crore. Personaday means the number of people worked per day multiplied by the number of days worked.

Reason for lack of funds

Some experts are citing the lack of funds as the reason for this, while some say that many migrants who reached the village during the lockdown in 2020 have not returned yet. Labor expert KR Shyam Sundar said, there has definitely been a fresh demand for work under MGNREGA in the post-harvest season, but the fund flow has slowed down. This may be because the state governments are waiting for the supplementary allocation from the Parliament.
